Overview

They say “Diamonds are forever,” but Hands for Africa says human lives and human limbs aren’t. Consider Maria, an 8-month-old baby girl in Sierra Leone. In an act of unfathomable cruelty, her arm was hacked off by the “rebel” terrorists of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF). The RUF mob sought to impose its will on Sierra Leone by chopping off thousands of civilian hands, feet and ears. Thousands more people have simply been slaughtered and left to rot in village streets. Men, women, children, civilian, soldier; it makes no difference to the rebels that were supported by these conflict diamonds purchased by the united states and the rest of the western world.
What we can do together? With one million signatures we can push Congress to put pressure on the international diamond trade. The United States is the premier retail market for diamonds, it has the clout to force a cleanup. Major diamond trading companies seem determined to turn a blind eye. The United States must force that eye open. You can be part of this amazing movement!
Retailers cannot guarantee that the diamond you purchase is not a conflict diamond. As consumers, we have the power to change that by demanding details about the diamonds we buy. Demanding proof that a diamond is conflict-free sends a powerful message to the world that we will not support an industry or nation
that helps fund terror groups. Change won’t happen overnight, but it will happen if we are persistent. You can also help by clicking here to get your own “STOP BLOOD DIAMONDS” wristband.

I think Hands For Africa is a great organization. The effort put forth by the people who created it is outstanding and amazing. At times you think does anybody even care about the people on the other side of the world. When you hear about the atrocities going on it makes me stop and think then I begin to thank God for my many blessings. Keep up the good work.
Robert Rodriguez,

Abbey Jewelry Studio,
As a conscious jewelry design and fabrication studio, we are aware of the true costs of all our materials, social and environmental, and have committed ourselves to be conscious, sustainable, and toxin free and make all our jewelry with Love. This includes conflict free fair trade diamonds and gemstones that are mined with ecologically sustainable practices. All our studio practices are also socially and environmentally conscious. However we are still making our living by an industry that has taken much, and we feel it is our responsibility to heal the damage done. Please encourage your local jeweler to do the same!
Hands for Africa is another wonderful step to educating the world of the true cost of diamonds. Please don't stop here, learn of the horrific cost of metal mining (including gold, silver and platinum) and gemstones.
Aurora Gutierrez,

I am a U.S. A. resident that married in 1995 at the age of 22 years old. I chose to have a wedding ceremony that reflected African and African American beliefs and traditions. My groom and I jumped the broom, performed a libation ceremony, and refused to purchase wedding rings with diamonds on them because of the acts of cruelty being performed on Africans in the diamond mines. This website and its' images of precious people with limbs missing really helps me to see how I was trying to take a stand for something that is far more serious than what I could hav eever imagined. I pledge to spread the word about these horrible acts. Thank you Hands for Africa for educating us all.

All you pathetic human beings who take advantage of others have no ability to completely control your own life and self. Your very existence is to fortify the bond between real humans, may you realize your actions destroy lives, and in the end your very own. The karma, law of attraction frequency, the feelings you give off around you on a daily basis bring about decay. You may have your spoils, but your heart, soul and mind are rotten and blacker than the deepest abyss.

Amonte Baines,
Hello,
My name is Amonte Baines, a student at Arizona State University. Recently, I was informed of your organization through a set of people hosting tables around the campus promoting and advertising the idea for Hands for Africa. Moved, I have decided to help in many ways, including forming clubs on the ASU campus dedicated to spread knowledge about causes such as these as well as several others, and also utilizing the things learned from this organization to write a research paper in my English 102 class, devoted to helping other students as well as others to so that they may become more educated and informed about the many hardships that our human race undergoes everyday. It would be nice to get some feedback from you guys, so that this cause can be taken to the next level.
Thanks for your time and I look forward to assist in any way,
Amonte Baines

I am actually doing a research paper on conflict diamonds. I have also heard a few songs from a few rap artists who actually condone conflict diamonds and for something like this to happen to our human race is actually pretty sad. The "rebels" are tormenting and abusing such innocent people of many African villages. Not only does it hurt them, but it also hurts other countries because those diamonds are being sold to consumers, but yet consumers aren't aware about conflict diamonds. They just buy them because it's such an appeal to them that they don't care who or where it came from, but they buy it for the beauty of it.

Retailers should be able to stand behind the diamonds that they sell and provide their customers with a guarantee not only of the standard quality, but of how they purchased them. What makes a diamond pure is the energy behind it. Don't allow diamonds to be sold that are laced with violence, hate, or corruption. Whoever is spearheading this thing needs to know that human lives are more important than their monetary gain.
Bryan Esparza,
I really want to do my part about his issue because it is definitely a serious one. I know they are more issues than people being mistreated when it comes to diamond mining. The mining itself destroys the environment around it with the toxic substances that are part of the process of mining diamonds. I plan on helping raise funds for this organization with my high school club.
Stephen Makia,
I am of the opinion that, if our government and that of the western nations institute a policy preventing the buying of these diamonds, there will be no incentives for these rebels to continue with these inhumane practices. It will very prudent for the U.S. government to lead in this fight.

i agree that if we put the labels on these diamonds that there is more awareness to the consumer. It will then promote the consumer to make a wiser choice about the blood diamond trades and massacres for the business. Its the same as sweat shops in other countries. Its everyone's responsibility to do the right thing.

I saw people at school within less then one minute I was ready to dig into my pocket to donate, sign the petition, and ask more information about the volunteer program. I am currently in my last year in college and will soon be able to have more time away from school. In addition, if any construction engineering questions are needed to be answered for building, I'd be glad to dig into them along side with a professor and try to help as much as I could.

In history, it has usually been conquests of nations that has caused amputations, whether forced, or by injuries during warfare. This is one of the only times I have ever read of even little children, babies really, losing limbs to someone's greed to mine diamonds. It must be stopped. I would never want to wear diamonds mined at the cost of limbs and cruelty to communities who just happen to live in the vicinity of the diamond mine. Diamonds belong in the Earth anyway. Limbs belong on people.

50,000 years ago, the human being reached what is called "full behavioral modernity." Humans may have gained more knowledge about the world which provides for them; however, we still commit atrocities against each other. As a member of a democratic nation who's government feels the need to stop terrorism and potential threats beyond our national borders, i cannot see how we can sit back and let the defenseless be mutilated by the thousands and still speak of justice. I am proud to be an American and believe in the principles my nation was founded on. I would hope that the current government along with the rest of the world's governments stop these tragic and senseless crimes from happening. 50,000 years and we still let the blood of children be shed for the very diamonds we give to our loved ones. Let everyone know that by being part of this organization, you are doing your part to show that after 50 millenniums humans have realized that we all deserve to live fulfilled lives no matter where we live or our background. I chose this topic for my high school senior project. These people need as much help as we can possibly give them, which is something that I stressed a lot during my presentation. The horrors that occur in places like this are unimaginable for most of us people who buy the diamonds that these abused people work to find day after day after day. It's a sad and troubling thing, but we can't afford to be oblivious to this issue anymore. Something needs to be done.

i had watched the blood diamond movie, it had alot to say… what people are doing for diamonds is ridicoulous… i believe our world is having soooo many wars and doing so many things for money. for what though? to make some money to ruin peoples lives or change them in a horrible way. people say that there is evil among us but why dont they start looking in the mirror. the evil is within the people all over the world, with different religions, opinons and all that is in between. blood diamonds, the RUF why are you doing this to these inocent people. and the united states knows whats going on to get most of the diamonds why keep buying them? why keep letting the gangs and terrorist keep over doing our supposibly good country? but yet you see all of these websites inocent people getting killed hands and feet chopped or tortured… alls im saying is STOP BLOOD DIAMONDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a student at University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. I am taking an Intercultural Communication class. I chose to watch the film Blood Diamond which brought about a significant culture shock to me. I feel very blessed to be living in a country where such conflict and bloodshed is not seen. I am taking my own personal action by performing further in depth research and strongly encouraging my friends and coworkers to do the same. This film and the stories of these innocent people brings tears to my eyes. I want to make a difference by creating awareness and refusing to purchase diamonds until the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme becomes mandatory for all diamond sellers. For those of you who don't know, the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme is an OPTIONAL yet strongly encouraged set of standards for sellers and traders in all countries to abide by IF THEY SO CHOOSE. According to KIMBERLYPROCESS.COM we have not yet established a way to track where our diamonds come from. The website suggests that major diamond retailers SHOULD only purchase diamonds from the mere 51 participants who are abiding by these strict standards of the KPCS. Please spread the word that this is not acceptable. No diamond is worth the price of a life. Education and awareness are the only foundation we have to build on.

As someone who is getting engaged soon, it frustrates me that my purchase that is supposed to symbolize love could be bought from people who use this money to terrorize. I know we cant completely get rid of this situation but we can lessen it by hopefully making it illegal in the United States, as we do purchase about 60% of it. I don't know how people can buy these diamonds that have been cultivated the way these were and not feel any remorse for wearing it. It's like slavery I guess– with that period of time where it was considered the norm because its 'always' been that way, and some people chose to look the other way. But no we're not going to do that! That's why we're signing this petition, to hopefully spark that change, the same kind of change that ended slavery and everything else that was worth fighting for

Often times, United States citizens take pride in their country's origins, declaring that they are a "Christian nation" and emphasize our moral responsibility to do good and refrain from commiting evil. But unfortunately, we are hypocritical in our actions and commit the most grievous offenses against one another and against others throughout the world. Ignoring the dreadful issues of the diamond industry is one of those offenses. Even if we are no longer call ourselves a "Christian nation," let the United States be a country known for defending the innocent and not supporting evil.

A country's natural endowment aboveground, underground, below the ocean and underneath the seabed like diamond, gold, oil and other rare earth metals are patrimonial properties of a nation. These natural resources should not only be used for the benefit of the living generation. the Rather, this national natural wealth should be utilized justifiably to promote equity and parity, peace and stability. Utilization of this earthly treasure should ensure the survival, improvement and continuity of the human specie.
