Hands for Africa is pleased to announce Thien Nghiem, recipient of the 2012 Ronald McDonald House Charities/Asian Pacific American Students Increasing Achievement Scholarship. Thien has demonstrated the qualities of not only a great student, local community leader, but also the character traits of a true world citizen. In addition to a college scholarship, Thien was given the opportunity to select a nonprofit organization to receive an additional $500 honorarium. Thien chose Hands for Africa, as he was recently rather involved with our organization, donating many of his personal hours to help the victims of the blood diamond conflict. Hands for Africa had the privilege of being present at the Ronald McDonald House Charities ceremony on June 2nd, to congratulate Thien and accept the honorarium donation.

Hands for Africa is pleased to grant 40 students a scholarship for the 2011-2012 (and beyond) school year. In December 2011, Alton Harding travelled to Sierra Leone and met with a number of students to symbolically deliver the educational scholarship certificate. The scholarship is designed to cover tuition, books, supplies, uniforms, school meals, and transportation. By accepting the receipt of scholarship funds, the students agreed to enroll as full-time students at an educational institution and to attend classes and complete courses required by the educational institution. They also agreed to maintain the minimum grade-point average of C+ and to work to maintain such average.

We are pleased that we were able to sponsor such a significant number of students and hope for further support from our donors to be able to provide even more children with scholarships that will allow them to receive basic and post primary education, build and support their own livelihoods, and gain self-reliance and independence.
