HFA has successfully provided survivors of Sierra Leone's civil war with the tools they need to become self-reliant. We are now looking to provide those same opportunities for kids in our own backyard by aiding after school programs in Southern California!
Many after school programs are losing federal funding, but most provide healthy meals, homework tutoring and organized sports at a low cost to the families. These programs are vital to a student's success in and out of the classroom.
- 11.3 million students take care of themselves after school, leading to juvenile violent crime tripling during these hours
- 1 in 5 students go hungry at some point during the year, statistically making them more likely to drop out of school
- 20 out of 48 million of people on SNAP are children
- 26.6% of students age 6-12 are deemed active & physical activity in general is associated with improved academic achievement and behavior
Statistics show that youth who participate in after school programs experience better academic and social outcomes, as well as higher education and career aspirations. Because of this, HFA is teaming up with local after school programs to help provide healthy meals, sports equipment and educational tools!
