Our Mission:

HFA has successfully provided survivors of Sierra Leone's civil war with the tools they need to become self-reliant.  We are now looking to provide those same opportunities for kids in our own backyard by aiding after school programs in Southern California! 

The Problem:

 Many after school programs are losing federal funding, but most provide healthy meals, homework tutoring and organized sports at a low cost to the families.  These programs are vital to a student's success in and out of the classroom. ​

• 11.3 million students take care of themselves after school, leading to juvenile violent crime tripling during these hours
• 1 in 5 students go hungry at some point during the year, statistically making them more likely to drop out of school
• 20 out of 48 million of people on SNAP are children
• 26.6% of students age 6-12 are deemed active &  physical activity in general is associated with improved academic achievement and behavior​

Statistics show that youth who participate in after school programs experience better academic and social outcomes, as well as higher education and career aspirations. Because of this, ​HFA is teaming up with local after school programs to help provide healthy meals, sports equipment and educational tools!
